Modify the Open Road Hat

I love my Open Road hat. Not just because it’s my pattern, but because I love the fit and ease of it. It stretches to fit my big ole noggin, but will also fits my 12 year old. It lives in my car or in my pocket all winter long. So, I needed a second one, right?! To keep in the other coat pocket!

As I contemplated what color I wanted for this all too important second hat, I hit on an idea. Why work with one color when you can work with two? The answer is you shouldn’t choose just one. I chose 2 different skeins of unknown DK in my deep stash, and made some mods. Now, I have a deliciously striped second hat!

If you’d like to recreate this two-color Open Road hat, follow these simple steps.

  • Choose a color you’d like to pop in the slip stitch section and ribbed band - call it “Main Color”

  • Use your main color to knit the ribbed band and the first 2 rounds of the Hat Body

  • Use your contrast color for Round 1 of the Hat Body and every slip stitch round for the rest of the hat

  • Use your main color for Round 2 of the Hat Body and every non-slip stitch round

  • Carry up the unused yarn every round by picking up the “new” yarn to be knit from under the dropped “old” yarn

  • You may need to snug up your yarns at the start of every round, but not too snug!

  • Follow all other written directions
